Petition for the lives of Hamzeh and Loghman: two young gay men who are in love and who risk the death sentence in Iran. And let’s not forget Pegah: the United Kingdom could still hand her over to the executioner.

by EveryOne Group (

The Islamic Republic of Iran is persecuting homosexuals, dissidents and free thinkers, and carrying out political crimes towards them.
Homosexual relationships in Iran are considered a crime liable to sadistic corporal punishment and the death sentence. On January 23rd, 2008, Hamzeh Chavi and Loghman Hamzehpour, two homosexual young men of 18 and 19, were arrested in Sardasht, in Iranian Azerbaijan. The authorities use physical and psychological torture to obtain confessions from people who fall into their hands, and the two young men admitted to being in love and having a relationship. Their confession was enough for the Islamic court to commit them to trial with two very serious charges: Mohareb, the crime of those who are “enemies of Allah” and Lavat, sodomy. Iranian criminal law envisages the gallows for homosexuals, who are considered “enemies of Allah”.
Nevertheless, there are many moderate political and religious figures in Iran who would like to change things and prevent the loss of so many innocent lives. The majority of Iranians are against the horrors of capital punishment through hanging and stoning; only a few extremists believe torture and flogging are admissible methods. The clandestine human rights movements are fighting heroically against these barbaric practices, risking their own lives in an effort to build a better Iran, a country in which minorities are respected and human life becomes a value once more. Thousands of Muslims believe Allah is a God of love, that the death sentences and brutal corporal punishment are crimes against humanity. On December 5th, 2007 an innocent Iranian boy was martyred by the Teheran regime and then murdered on the scaffold. From all over the world, in answer to the campaign for the life of Makwan Moloudzadeh – promoted by EveryOne Group – thousands of Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and non-believers sent red and white flowers to President Ahmadinejad and the Iranian judges: red, in an attempt to avoid the spilling of innocent blood; white to implore his executioners to spare the life of yet another blameless condemned man. This vast international campaign served only to delay an execution which had already been decided.
Today Makwan is the symbol of the martyrdom of the many innocent victims of a ruthless regime. Let us also remember Pegah Emambakhsh, the Iranian lesbian woman who is still waiting for the result of her appeal in the United Kingdom, and who risks being deported to Iran, where torture and stoning await her. EveryOne has received worrying news from the United Kingdom, where the Court of Appeal does not appear inclined to grant Pegah political asylum – in defiance of all the international conventions. Pegah is crushed by the attitude of the British Government and has told us she is tired of fighting, she is reluctant to appear in the newspapers and no longer believes in what Anne Frank defined as “man’s inner goodness”. We must respect Pegah’s wishes, but we have to be ready to say no to the ritish Government, which has abandoned the path of respect for the rights of women, homosexuals and refugees. We have to be ready to raise a chorus of protest, throughout the world, in order to stop the hand of the executioner and his accomplices.

That is why we are asking you to devote a few minutes of your time to this petition; add your signature and send a protest to all the addresses listed below, because many human lives, the concept of justice itself and the value of human rights are at stake here.

God Hates Fags fanatics may picket Ledger funeral

The Westboro Baptist Church has declared its intention to protest at the funeral of actor Heath Ledger, who died yesterday. The statement from the church is reproduced below.
28-year-old Ledger was best-known for his Oscar-nominated performance in gay-themed cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain.
The Westboro Baptist Church, led by Fred Phelps, has generated publicity by protesting at the funerals of US service personnel killed in action.
They first came to prominence for picketing the funeral of murdered gay teen Matthew Shepard in 1998.
In a statement released today Mr Phelps announced his intention to picket Mr Ledger’s funeral and said:
“Heath Ledger thought it was great fun defying God Almighty and his plain word; to wit: God Hates Fags! & Fag Enablers!
“Ergo, God hates the sordid tacky, bucket of slime seasoned with vomit known as Brokeback Mountain – and He hates all persons having anything whatsoever to do with it.
“Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there – beside which, nothingelse about Heath Ledger is relevant or consequential.”
It is as yet unknown if Mr Ledger will be laid to rest in his native Australia or in America.
While US laws regarding freedom of speech and assembly protects the Phelps’ and the tiny Westboro Baptist Church in their home country, it is unlikely that the Australian authorities would find their tactics acceptable.
Today Australia’s Prime Minister paid tribute to Mr Ledger:
“It is tragic that we have lost one of our nation’s finest actors in the prime of his life,” he said.
“Heath Ledger’s diverse and challenging roles will be remembered as some of the great performances by an Australian actor.”
Australian actors Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman also expressed their shock at the loss of such a considerable talent.
I had such great hope for him,” said Gibson, who cast Heath Ledger in The Patriot, said.
“He was just taking off and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”
The Westboro Baptist church operates a website called GodHatesFags and have protested at over 100 funerals of soldiers killed in the line of duty in Iraq.
Their campaign, called “Thank God for Improvised Explosive Devices” involves protesters holding up signs and chanting slogans such as “God Hates Fags,” “America is Doomed” and “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” at the widows of the servicemen.

Dear Friends and Donors of Iraqi LGBT

This is an urgent appeal for donation to all our friends and supporters all around the world to help us to maintain our two safe houses and the operation of Iraqi Lgbt campaign in London UK.

The pay pal donation button on The Iraqi LGBT Blog Spot is re-activated.

As you may know we have three safe houses that have been closed down because of the lack of funds, members who left safe houses now face their fate in a country that is certainly no place for sexual minorities.

Iraqi Lgbt managed to obtain new video footage that shows members of the Iraqi police stripping off and shaving the hair of a trans member of our group who used to be a resedient in one of our safe houses that been closed down in Najaf. After this indignity we have been unable to find the location or the location of this member and we are not sure of his final outcome we are trying to determine this now.

Thank you for your support and kindly ask that you pass the word around that if anyone wishes to make a donation to help Iraqi LGBT in its work to maintain safe houses and work that we coordinate from London. You can choose to use the pay pal method or you send a check payable to “Outrage!” with a cover note marked “For Iraqi LGBT”, at the following address, Outrage, PO Box 17816, London SW14 8WT, England, UK.

We apologies for any inconvenience please feel free to contact with any questions or concerns and we wish all of you well!

“Corpus Christi”, a play that depicts Jesus as gay, is set to open in Australia at Sydney’s annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival in early February. There has been predictable outrage expressed in the media. The Anglican Bishop of Sydney, Robert Forsyth, described the play as “deliberately offensive” and “historical nonsense”.

The play portrays Jesus and the disciples as gay men.

Terence McNally, who wrote the acclaimed play, created a gay Jesus partly as a way of exploring the feelings of rejection and persecution he experienced as a gay youth growing up in Texas. When the play opened in the UK in 1999 in addition to taking harsh criticism from conservative Christians, McNally became the target of a fatwa issued by an Islamic group.

Assuming an historical Jesus existed, why is it considered outrageous by some to speculate that he may not have been heterosexual in orientation? In the Bible mention of homosexuality is rare, in part because it was considered taboo in the context of Jewish customs. Being homosexual in a patriarchal and homophobic culture of that time would tend to push you to the fringes. Jesus was certainly far out on the fringes. He was an outsider – in his own words “despised and rejected”.

Nor was Jesus even remotely respectable. The Pharisees accused him of being a drunkard and partying with “sinners”. So clearly there was an aspect of his behavior that flew in the face of conventional conduct.

There is no record of Jesus engaging in any sexual relations with women. He remained unmarried. However we do know that he spent most of his time in the company of men. There are passages in the New Testament that indicate he had a special love for one particular disciple.

While it is true that the culture of his day tended to be much more demonstrative in terms of gestures of physical affection between males, than exists for example in contemporary American culture – nonetheless the following verse from John 21:20 suggests an unusually intimate connection between the two men :

“Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?”

The Greek term used to describe the love Jesus had for this disciple is “agape”.

New Disappearances in Iraq
By: Doug Ireland

Ali Hili, the 33-year-old gay Iraqi exile who is the founder and coordinator of Iraqi LGBT, which has members, supporters, and informants throughout Iraq, told Gay City News this week by telephone from London, “New reports tell us that the seven gay men were arrested by the police in the cities of Karbala, Najaf, Basra, and Ammara, and no one has been able to obtain any news of them since December 2.”

Hili said the men – named Hussein, Mawla, Najim, Haydar, Khalid, Basim, and Rasool – are all presumed dead, but their last names cannot be published on the slight chance that one or more of them might still be alive. He added that three transgendered Iraqis also disappeared last month in different parts of Iraq “after receiving multiple threats of death if they didn’t move out of the neighborhoods where they lived.”

“The situation is getting worse day by day, and most of our group’s members and contacts inside Iraq are so afraid that even talking about the situation of Iraqi LGBT people over the phone or through chat rooms on the Internet is something they’re too scared to do,” Hili said. “Most of the gay community are using secret code words to mislead authorities about their locations, identities, and activities when speaking on the phone or communicating in chat rooms.”

Since its founding in November 2005 by Hili and 30 other exiled gay asylum-seekers in the UK, Iraqi LGBT has documented well over 400 separate cases of LGBT Iraqis who have been murdered by the death squads. Most of these killings have been the work of the Badr Corps, the armed militia of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), the largest Shiite political formation and the core of the current US-backed government. The Badr-Corps’ spiritual guide, the 77-year-old Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, issued a death-to-all-gays fatwa in 2005.

Last year, the Badr Corps was integrated into the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior, and its anti-gay death squads now wear police uniforms, have full martial powers, and can carry out kidnappings and murders of LGBT Iraqis with impunity. This reporter has been chronicling the anti-gay murder campaign in the pages of this newspaper since early 2006, and links to previous articles on Iraq may be found at the bottom of the web version of this article at

Also this week, Iraqi LGBT released a video of the muscular interrogation of a transgendered gay man by Iraqi police. “His name is Ali, but he was living his life as a woman, and was a member of our group,” Hili told Gay City News, “and was one of those who had been living in the safe house we ran in Basra for those threatened with death.”

Earlier prosecution department confirmed police breached Russian legislation

It became known on Friday that Moscow magistrates court # 367 judge Larisa Bogdanovich acquitted all gay activists detained on 2 December at the polling station # 165 during State Duma elections while they participated in “protest voting”. An hour later after the activists were arrested homophobic Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who banned two Gay Prides in his city in 2006 and 2007, voted at the same polling station.

More than two dozens of Russian gay activists came to vote at the polling station, where Moscow Mayor usually casts his votes, to express their protest against the whole electoral process and homophobic position of all political parties including President Vladimir Putin’s “United Russia” for which Mr. Luzhkov was heading Moscow list.

13 activists were detained inside the polling station by special security and police. All of them, including the organizers of Moscow Pride Nikolai Alekseev, Nikolai Baev and Alexey Davydov, were brought to Tverskoi district police station where they spent seven hours and were accused of conducting a picket without notifying the Moscow authorities. According to the Russian law it is an administrative offence which carries a fine of up to 2,000 roubles (40 pounds).

Prosecution of Tverskoi district of Moscow ruled that by detaining gay activists for more than 3 hours policemen seriously breached Russian Administrative Code. All activists were released from police after the surprising appearance of prosecution department representatives.

Moscow magistrates court interrogated two police officers who allegedly took part in activists’ detaining on 2 December. According to court decision, police officers were unable to say what the detained persons did inside the polling station. They said that by arresting people they only followed the orders of the higher authorities within the police.

Court observed that activists did not have any agitation materials with them, they did not demand anything from the authorities by using placards. Court concluded that there was no picketing held in the meaning of Russian law on public meetings which means that persons detained did not conduct an illegal public gathering.

Organiser of Moscow Gay Pride and one of the initiators of homosexuals’ protest voting during Duma elections Nikolai Alekseev, who wrote on his ballot paper in Russian “No to homophobes! No to Luzhkov!” said on Friday that “this is our first considerable victory in courts in the legal fight with Moscow authorities and Moscow Mayor personally. Lawlessness of the authorities can be witnessed during all our actions but up to now we never won in court. This is a positive signal”.

Now acquitted Russian activists are considering legal suit for moral damages against Moscow police for illegal arrest and detention.

President Putin’s “United Russia” party overwhelmingly won parliamentary elections on 2 December though the Moscow list of the party with Mr. Luzhkov as its head got slightly less votes than in the country in general.

The Socialist mayor of Paris has been given increased police protection after US security services informed their French counterparts that he might be attacked by terrorists.

While monitoring internet traffic related to Al-Qaeda the CIA discovered that Bertrand Delanoe was listed as a target.

As mayor of France’s biggest city, he is the most prominent gay politician in the country.

“I am calm. I have the information I need and I have complete confidence in the work of police headquarters vis-a-vis security problems in general, terrorism in particular and finally the protection of the mayor of Paris,” Mr Delanoe said on TV station iTele.

A police spokesman confirmed that the mayor was being given more security and stressed that the threat did not come directly from the terrorist organisation.
Mr Delanoe is running for a second seven-year term as mayor of Paris in March and he is viewed as a potential 2012 presidential candidate for the Socialists.

He enjoys solid approval ratings in the French capital following the success of various pet projects he pushed through a troublesome Green/Socialist alliance at city hall.

Despite his party’s defeat to Nicolas Sarkozy in last year’s parliamentary elections, the Socialists made significant gains in Paris, winning 13 out of 21 districts.

This result sparked rumours of a future presidential bid.

Mr Delanoe’s ‘Paris Plage’ project, in which he oversaw the creation of a man-made beach on the banks of the Seine, was an unexpected success and continues to draw substantial crowds in the summer months.

His attempted assassination in October 2002 did no harm to his popularity either.
